The #88 Kiton Outerlimits crew took their first Evolution win of the year in Malta
The #88 Kiton Outerlimits team once again proved their prowess in rough seas, repeating their impressive form from Malta and scoring their third win of the year in today’s Evolution-class Sprint race. Third place for #99 Fountain Worldwide 1st4boats.com, though, was enough for them to successfully defend their 2007 title.
The #10 Fantastic 1 Cigarette boat led an incredibly rough start lap, but, by the end of the third lap, #88 Kiton Outerlimits were comfortably leading the way from #10 Fantastic 1 and #99 Fountain Worldwide. The order stayed that way to the end, and #88 Kiton Outerlimits’ victory has given them a useful points boost in their bid to take second place in the championship standings.
“It was incredibly rough, but it’s great to have won again,” #88 Kiton Outerlimits team boss and throttleman Giancarlo Cangiano said. “We have once again demonstrated that the Outerlimits hull is the strongest boat in rough conditions.”
The #60 GFN Gibellato boat – the only remaining outside-chance title contenders – started the race fifth and, although they quickly worked their way up into fourth, were never really able to close the gap to #99 Fountain Worldwide. That means that the #99 Fountain Worldwide team have secured enough points to become the first Evolution-class team to successfully defend their championship crown.
The #66 Cranefields Wine and #57 Centaurian Yachts boats rounded out the top six finishers from the #53 Pignolo team, while the #77 Lucas Oil, #69 Honeyparty.com and #76 Italcraft boats were early retirements in the incredibly rough conditions.
