JD Byrider Hoists the Garwood Trophy

It was an electric atmosphere at the 2011 Detroit APBA Gold Cup with a weekend full of captivating powerboat racing provided by P1 SuperStock USA and the Air National Guard Hydroplane Series.

The number 14 JD Byrider boat, driven by Mark Kowalski and throttled by his son, Cody Kowalski, accumulated 470 points sealing an overall victory for the weekend. The father and son combination will have their name engraved on a plaque on the coveted Garwood trophy.

JD Byrider took the checkered flag in both heats on Saturday and only needed a second-place finish in the final heat on Sunday to secure the top position in the overall standings of the weekend.

Mark Kowalski and his son Cody Kowalski displayed some incredible starts off the line and when they pushed their way to the inside position they were determined to keep it.

Mark Kowalski has 15 years of experience in boat racing and had some great remarks about his weekend in the P1-28SS Panther. “The competition was unbelievable. We had a lot of fun.  One of the most memorable father and son things we have done together,” said Kowalksi.

When asked about the brand new P1 USA SuperStock Series, he said, “This is such an incredible opportunity to get involved with this racing. From father and son to very competitive people, I can’t express how much fun we had doing this.”

Coming in a close second by just five points was the number 13 Miss Madison boat driven by Kyle Dietzen and throttled by Brett Furschman. The Miss Madison team fittingly took the checkered flag last weekend in Madison and had a great weekend of racing in Detroit. The number 13 boat won the final heat and will have some momentum to carry with them into the remainder of the season.

Also making the podium was team Peters and May of the number 10 boat driven by Azam Ali and throttled by Kyle Sanborn. These two competitors are the youngest of the fleet and showed outstanding improvement throughout the weekend and look to have a bright future ahead.

The SVS Series was dominated by Time Bandit of the number 23 boat, driven by Bob Mazikowski and throttled by Travis Loffland who proudly won the Detroit Yacht Club Silver Cup in their first P1 race of the season. Time Bandit finished third in the first heat of the weekend but made some adjustments and managed to win each of the four remaining SVS heats.

Finishing second in the SVS class was Pirate Racing of the number 21 boat who has been the most consistent team throughout the first two events of the season. Driven by David Denham and throttled by his son, Travis Denham, Pirate Racing finished second in three of the five SVS heats of the Detroit APBA Gold Cup.

Octane Racing, driven by Jim Simmons and throttled by Tyler Crockett, of the number 411 boat finished third overall in Detroit by winning the first heat of the weekend and finishing third in three out of five heats on the weekend,

Overall, the weekend was an unbelievable success for Powerboat P1 USA as the Series continues to grow and gain exposure throughout the entire country in front of giant crowds of race fans.

The Detroit APBA Gold Cup is the oldest trophy in all of motorsports and it was an absolute honor for Powerboat P1 USA to bring their Series and boats to Detroit and entertain all of the powerboat enthusiasts.

The P1 SuperStock USA Series will pick up again in Morehead City, NC August 19-21 for the 6th Annual Crystal Coast Gran Prix.
