POWERBOAT P1 SHOWCASES NEW BOAT IN MIAMI
Over 104,000 visitors were on hand at this year’s Miami International Boat show where Powerboat P1 unveiled the P1-28SS Panther boat and the new SuperStock race series for North America.
This year’s show was the first time that P1 had exhibited in Miami, and its presentation of the revolutionary boat and race series sparked the interest of people attending from all over the world. Nearly 700 people registered for information on Powerboat P1’s SuperStock series and the new P1 Panther.
“The response that P1 received was tremendous,” according to James Durbin, Commercial Director for Powerboat P1. “To be here from our London headquarters and see the enthusiasm for the concept confirms that we are on the right track with our innovative approach.”
The versatility of the new boat was featured on the SuperStock exhibition stand, with both the race and leisure versions on display.
The race version of the boat made its public debut at the Performance Racing Industry Show in Orlando, Florida in December 2010. It was then unveiled a month later in Europe at Autosport International in Birmingham, UK. Both shows proved to be hugely successful, but this was the first time that the pleasure version had been seen.
The ability to switch between racing and pleasure is a unique feature of the boat. In a simple 5-minute process, the cowling can be removed to deliver a 4-seat cockpit with all the luxury expected from a state-of-the-art leisure boat.
P1’s Director of North American Operations, Martin Sanborn says, “People were surprised to learn that the two boats on display were identical, with the exception of the removable race cowling. We wanted something that didn’t look like a converted race boat, and we have hit the mark.”
Powerboat P1 USA is now working on scheduling demo days in March where people will be able to test drive the P1-28SS Panther on a race course.
The ground-breaking boat is the center-piece of the Powerboat P1 SuperStock Championship, aimed at leveling the playing field in powerboat racing, and bringing back dynamic competition that has been missing for more than a decade.
SuperStock is a “single design” series where every boat will be identical. The P1 SuperStock tag line: One Series, One Boat, One Engine, and One Champion, outlines the series’ philosophy. The odds are even, and the pilot is what makes the difference.
“To be a viable motorsport, there has to be a credible competition model and that starts with the new boat. We wanted something unique and inspirational that would attract new racers to the sport. In the P1-28SS we have something that appeals not only to competitors but also to their families, friends, and business contacts,” said Robert Wicks, Chief Operating Officer.
The P1 SuperStock Championship will run in both the UK and USA this year, with t
he American series scheduled to start in May in Biloxi, with four additional events in the planning stages across the country.
