PWLLHELI ATTRACTS ANOTHER MAJOR MARINE CHAMPIONSHIP
Pwllheli Sailing Club welcomes the UK's premier marine motorsport to its marina next weekend with twelve thrill-seeking teams racing around the Lleyn Peninsula for an action-packed weekend.
Following last year's successful visit of the British powerboat racing competition, Events Manager at Clwb Hwylio Pwllheli Sailing Club, Gareth Roberts, is delighted that Pwllheli was invited to host the third round of the Powerboat P1 SuperStock Championship's 2010 series. He said: "Pwllheli Sailing Club has a great track record of hosting world class nautical championships. Last year, we staged two international sailing events and three national championships, so it is great to be able to add another to the list."
It is unsurprising that Pwllheli has earned global recognition, especially with 1500 Sailors competing in the Lleyn Peninsula's waters every year. The widespread appreciation, including it being acknowledged as part of the UK national academy sailing network by the Royal Yachting Association, will attract sailing teams for their London 2012 pre-games training camps before they compete for gold at Weymouth in two years time.
Roberts added: "We have the best sailing waters in Britain. Pwllheli is very popular amongst the top sailing coaches who choose to train their squads here. There is a very weak tidal stream and it is also open to prevailing winds."
Motor-boating is also extremely fashionable in Pwllheli with 40% of the sailing club's members owning a powerboat. He said: "It's important to keep large-scale events in Pwllheli. Getting our name on the powerboat circuit is brilliant for us and for Pwllheli.
With the action so close to the beach, spectators will have a front row seat for the racing. The Pwllheli Grand Prix of the Sea takes place on July 10-11.
