P1 SuperStock USA teams are preparing for the final race weekend of their opening season at the San Diego Bayfair scheduled for Sept. 16-18 when the series champion will be crowned.
At arguably one of the best venues for powerboat racing in the world, SuperStock USA teams will compete in Mission Bay off Ski Beach in San Diego, CA for rounds 8, 9, and 10 of the 2011 season.
The top four teams in the SuperStock USA standings are all within 11 points of each other and with 60 points up for grab in San Diego, the title race is wide open.
Due to a course infraction that cost team Miss Madison of Kyle Dietzen and Paul Gallup 20 points and the victory in Morehead City, team Oregon Custom Marine holds a one-point lead in the SuperStock USA standings despite never finishing first overall at any event the entire season. Driver and team owner Tim Mcdonald and throttled by Mike DeFrees, The number 15 boat got off to a great start in Madison and Detroit finishing no lower than second in three of the opening four rounds.
The Miss Madison team is one point out of first place heading into the final weekend of racing. The penalty in Morehead City proved to be a costly one for Miss Madison who was looking at a comfortable 20-point lead in the standings, but instead finds themselves in the midst of a heated competition for first place in the P1 SuperStock USA Championship.
After making back-to-back podiums in Detroit and Morehead City, team Peters and May is currently third in the points table. The young Peters and May squad of Azam Ali and Kyle Sanborn are only eight points out of the lead, with father-and-son combo Mark and Cody Kowalski of team JD Byrider following closely behind by three points. With a strong showing in San Diego, both Peters and May and JD Byrider have a great shot at pulling off a major upset.
Looking to build some momentum before the offseason is team Ocala Gran Prix, who joined the SuperStock USA fleet in Morehead City. Driver John Hansen and throttleman Jorge Arellano finished last in their first showing in Morehead City but improved to fifth in the final round.
The SuperStock USA teams will begin testing Friday morning with round eight, a makeup round due to the cancellation of Houston, scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
The action will pick up again on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. when SuperStock USA teams race head-to-head in their Match Racing competition. Round nine is scheduled for 4:45 p.m. on Saturday. The tenth and final round of the P1 SuperStock USA Championship is scheduled for 4:20 p.m. on Sunday.
