SATURDAY SNAPSHOT - DAY ONE OF THE DETROIT APBA GOLD CUP

The fans of Detroit saw an unbelievable day of racing today at the 2011 APBA Detroit Gold Cup.

Due to an unfortunate accident last weekend in Madison involving a collision between a Hydroplane boat and a rescue boat, Detroit Gold Cup Officials decided to cancel the P1 SuperStock USA head-to-head Match Race in order to secure the safety of the passengers in each rescue boat.

However, the fans still got their money’s worth as the P1 SuperStock USA Panther class ran two extra heats on Saturday that consisted of ten laps. The Panthers provided some incredible racing for the fans in the Grand Stands in Detroit.

In the first heat, the number 14 boat, JD Byrider, driven by Mark Kowalksi and throttled by Cody Kowalski, hit the ground running and the father and son combination never looked back. JD Byrider led the entire race by a couple of boat lengths, leaving the rest of the pack in the rearview mirror.

While the number 14 boat cruised to victory, there was an all-out battle for second place amongst the rest of the fleet. Team Oregon Custom Marine, Miss Madison, and Peters and May all saw the lights of second place at one point during the race.

Oregon Custom Marine and Miss Madison were nose-to-nose until the final lap but Oregon Custom Marine ultimately got the inside position securing second place.

The pole positions were reversed in heat two, meaning the number 14 boat JD Byrider received the outside lane making it difficult to jump out to an early lead. The starting position made no difference to Mark and Cody Kowalski as they got out to a great start and led the entire race and enjoyed first place once again. The JD Byrider team now sits in the driver’s seat for the Gold Cup going into tomorrow.

The SVS boats also ran two heats on Saturday and created plenty of noise and excitement for the Detroit fans.

After leading the entire race in heat one, the number 29 Typhoon Racing boat ran out of fuel with two laps to go and gave the lead to the number 411 Team Octane boat. Driven by Jim Simmons and throttled by Tyler Crockett, Team Ocatane took complete advantage of Typhoon Racing’s fueling issue and took the checkered flag.

After finishing last in heat one, Time Bandit, driven by Bob Mazikowski and throttled by Travis Lofland, wiped out the rest of the competition, easily finishing in first place and putting the last-place finish in heat one behind them.

The action picks up again tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. for P1SuperStock USA. Both the Panther and SVS class are scheduled for three heats. The SuperStock Series final is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. followed by the SVS final at 3:30 p.m.
