USAF Wins the Annual Sound of Freedom Cup

Patriotism stirred the air on Saturday at the Annual Sound of Freedom Cup of the Crystal Coast Grand Prix in Morehead City as the Panthers tore up the Bogue Sound.

Six different military branches, the USAF, USMC, USCG, N.C. National Guard, Army, and Navy were represented by personnel from different stations across eastern North Carolina. Each station sent a representative from their base to hop into one of the Panthers with a P1 SuperStock driver for 10 laps of thrilling powerboat racing.

At the end of the day, the USAF represented by SSgt Pierre Convers based out of Seymour Johnson in boat 15 took the checkered flag and hoisted the first Sound of Freedom Cup trophy.

After the race, SSgt Convers said, “I had a great time and I finished first place. I want to thank everyone at P1 SuperStock USA for making this an awesome experience.”

The first place finish for the number 15 USAF boat did not come easy as the boat had was in third place with two laps to go before passing the number 51 Navy boat and the number 16 N.C. National Guard boat.

The number 51 Navy boat was navigated by PR1 John Allen Cole who has served in the Navy for 10 ½ years.

“I came in third place but it was the greatest experience in the world. It was such a rush out there on that boat,” said Cole.

The number 17 USMC boat was represented by SSgt Lebron Manning who is stationed just 15 minutes from Morehead City. His boat came in last place but SSgt Manning still had some exciting remarks about the race.

“We unfortunately finished 6th place, we had some equipment issues but I had a great time and some fun on the water,” said Manning. “We bounced around a lot out there.”

After the race, each military personnel participated in a podium awards ceremony where they were honored by staff and spectators. Lt. Colonel Mowery, Base Commander of Cherry Point, presented the trophy.

The Sound of Freedom Cup was an excellent success for everyone involved and P1 SuperStock USA hopes to make this event a tradition each year.
