Sports fans and families will converge on Stokes Bay this weekend (July 11 & 12) when P1 SuperStock and AquaX racing returns to the Solent to serve up a feast of free-to-watch, high-speed action, whilst on-shore families can enjoy activities and entertainment of all kinds.
This will be P1’s second visit to the town after it hosted the final round of the 2014 championships. The Gosport peninsular, which provides outstanding views of the Isle of Wight, represents one of the country’s finest maritime playgrounds and P1 chief operating officer, Robert Wicks is predicting some tough racing in the potentially challenging waters of the Solent. “Both of our race series are hugely competitive this season, and with national titles to be won you wouldn’t expect anything else” he says. “The support from everyone in Gosport is tremendous and we want to put on another outstanding show of marine motorsport and family entertainment this year. It will be a great day out.”
The two-day programme will include jet ski freestyle displays between races, and one of the best places to marvel at the back flips and barrel rolls will be on board the Gosport Ferry as it cruises the waters off Stokes Bay on Sunday. Performing the breath-taking, high-energy freestyle routine will be world and national champions Lee Stone and Jason Bleasdale. Gosport Ferry finance director Chris Waters comments: “As a key transport link between the two communities of Portsmouth and Gosport, we are proud to be supporting the Grand Prix of the Sea that was such a success last year.”
Family entertainment will get underway on Friday evening when the funfair opens and there will then be a host of activities for children to enjoy across the weekend, including water zorbing, bungee trampolines, laser quest, inflatables and face painting, plus a bar to refresh parents! On Saturday there will be free live music from tribute and cover bands, with the stage hosted by Wave 105’s Rick Jackson. The fleet of eleven P1 Panther race boats will gather at Gosport Marina on Friday when the Mayor of Gosport, Councillor Keith Farr will enjoy a powerboat experience ride with one of the SuperStock drivers at the wheel. The Mayor will join the podium celebrations at Stokes Bay on Sunday afternoon to present trophies and champagne to the winning teams and riders.
