Lycamobile world number 1, Eric Francis
The UK's Phil Pope holds onto second place
Blaine Spooner rises up the ladder to third
Eric Francis has retained his position at the top of the P1 AquaX World Rankings powered by Lycamobile which he has now held for 54 consecutive weeks.
“It’s awesome to keep top spot. It’s getting harder and harder to stay there with so much competition in this series. My focus is on winning the AquaX USA National Championship, but there are some serious challengers this year.”
With nine races remaining this season, Aqsa and Aero Aswar are first and second in the USA series which has rocketed them up the world rankings to seventh and sixth respectively.
Lisa Barsby, Global Head of AquaX commented: “The Aswar brothers have made a huge impact this season, having already claimed seven wins from nine starts between them. But we are only at the halfway mark, and with 180 points still on offer a lot can change. The experienced Mike Klippenstein and Eric Francis are right on their heels”
Blaine Spooner will look to continue his rise up the World Rankings as he defends his St Cloud Grand Prix of the Sea title this weekend. Spooner had two wins and a second to dominate the field last year and gain significant Ranking points, and he will need similar performances on East Lake Toho this year to retain his position at number three in the world.
“It’s great to be in the top five as we head to the St Cloud event” commented Spooner. “The flatter conditions suit my riding style and the Sea-Doo, so I’m looking for a good result to keep my place in the world rankings.”
On the other side of the Atlantic, the UK’s leading 300 rider, Phil Pope has reduced the gap to Francis following superb, consistent racing over the last 12 months. Pope has to contend with the weighted value of each race being reduced as a result of smaller race fields in the UK, but his sheer consistency in finishing at the front of the pack has him right on the heels of Francis. The standings in the P1 AquaX World Rankings powered by Lycamobile will be announced again at the end of the season, when the leading rider will be awarded a Sony Xperia Z3 cell phone powered by a Lycamobile sim card and the World Number 1 race vest for the start of the 2016 race season.
The St Cloud Grand Prix of the Sea takes place this weekend (Saturday August 1 and Sunday August 2).
