Marine motorsport fans on the south coast are set for a real treat this weekend when the two P1 race series return to Bournemouth seafront for the season finale. A fleet of eleven race boats and more than forty jet ski riders will be on the water close to the famous pier.
Robert Wicks, chief operating officer of Powerboat P1, said: “It’s a festival of skill and power, with boats, jet ski racing and freestyle displays. It’s all about family entertainment and it’s free to watch. Our motto is ‘fast, furious and fun’ and we’ll be serving up two days of high speed action for local residents and visitors to enjoy.”
Last year was P1’s first visit to the resort town and the impressive growth and quality of its free events programme played a major role in P1 selecting it as a host venue. Another key factor in the decision was the superb amphitheatre setting for spectators to watch the racing from the cliff top, beach and pier. Wicks explained: “Our partnership with the Bournemouth Coastal Business Improvement District (BID) is a key element of our wider event strategy, and our race weekend last summer introduced a new range of visitors to all that Bournemouth has to offer and helped to boost trade and increase footfall in the town.”
Visitors to the Lycamobile stand close to the pier will be able to enter a free competition to win a luxury family holiday for four people to Kissimmee in the Sunshine State of Florida. The prize includes a week-long stay in a 6 bedroom villa, tickets for local attractions and activities, and £500 spending money from Lycamobile, a leading P1 sponsor.
Mayor of Bournemouth, Councillor John Adams, said: “As the UK’s most ‘eventful’ town, we are proud to host this fantastic free event and I am very much looking forward to seeing jet ski freestyle action from world champion Lee Stone and British champion Jason Bleasdale.” The two freestylers will kick off the P1 programme at 12.30pm on both days. The Mayor will present trophies to the winning powerboat team and jet ski riders at the podium ceremony at the P1 Race Centre at Pier Approach at 4.00pm on Sunday, when the 2015 P1 champions will also be announced
