Flying Panther's Martin Robinson & Nick Williams are presented with a Meantime Bewery pack by Dale Power Solutions Chief Executive Tim Wilkins
We live in an age of sound bites and cliches - none more so than ‘journey’ and ‘focus’. But these two words quickly spring to mind when telling the story of the new P1 SuperStock UK champions, Nick Williams and Martin Robinson.
The two met in Amersham and when Nick needed a new navigator for his second season of P1 racing in 2013 he invited Martin to join him. “I thought the race series looked incredible” says Martin “and opportunities like this don’t come along in life to most people so I jumped at it” That’s how the journey began that saw them crowned 2015 SuperStock champions in Bournemouth.
Despite being the son of a former powerboat champion, Nick entered the championship in 2012 as a 32-year-old novice having only contested a couple of small club events in his youth. But he made his intentions clear from the outset when telling the press: “I’m very competitive and want to make my mark this year and begin to challenge at the front of the field.”
So what about the latest stage of the journey to success? “It’s been a tough season of 20 races, with strong competition and often harsh sea conditions” explains Martin. “It’s been a real roller coaster, but with team work, a great boat, racing experience and a bit of luck along the way we’ve achieved something special.”
Will the journey continue in 2016? “You’ll have to wait and see” says Nick.
