Scarborough was always going to be the unknown season opener - new teams, crews with another year of experience behind them and old hands with new ideas. We were very pleased with the boat and result, finishing 3rd on the podium, while running all 3 races with the engine firing on only 5 cylinders due to a spark plug lead coming off in the heavy sea conditions limiting us to only 4500 rpm. For Greenock all we want is everything firing on all cylinders - really! No pun intended.

We are expecting it to be a lot flatter than Scarborough - but always hard to tell - wind over tide in the wrong direction you can get a nasty short very steep chop that is very hard and uncomfortable - long term forecast looks ok and when we look at the online webcams it always looks flat. I think that those that have experience in Hull on the Humber, and Liverpool on the Mersey may have an advantage - estuaries provide a unique challenge with current, wash, wind and tide.

John Donnelly and Vin Burdock have a fast boat, but considering we could keep up with them in Scarborough on 5 cylinders and a broken foot throttle I'm not too worried. I’m sure Pickfords with Hobbo and Martin Robinson - lots of experience in both seats and a very fast boat - would have been in the mix in Scarborough if they had not had some of the issues they experienced. The Inverclyde boys looked very quick in Scarborough - if they can keep the boat in one piece…

It’s still all to play for. It's early days in the championship - consistency and getting the boat home will be key.
