The competition to design, develop and construct a boat to complete a 15-metre course was open to young people aged 7 to 19 at schools, colleges and youth groups in the Scarborough area working in teams of up to six. More than 250 free kits to power the boats were sent out to participating teams, who competed in three age groups, and the boats then raced at a special event at The Spa complex as part of Scarborough Engineering week earlier this month.
“The entries came in a huge variety of shapes and styles” said Dave, “but all the boats were made with great enthusiasm and pride. I have to thank the Institution of Engineering & Technology and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers for funding the challenge, and also local company Dale Power Solutions for providing trophies and medals. As well as being fun, the competition showed young people how science, technology, engineering and mathematics are so important in the real world.”
The teams were asked to make a short presentation to demonstrate their understanding of the challenge and key learnings. The judges were looking for the best design and build, the fastest time over the course and the best presentation.
