Platinum Products took top spot after a dominant performance on day one
Glorious sunshine greeted the fleet of P1 Panthers as Aalborg welcomed SuperStock racing for the very first time with a nine-boat field taking to the water to contest the first of four rounds on the 2017 calendar.
There was some close racing as the teams competed in a number of heats across the day
The thousands of Danish spectators lining the waterfront were treated to an epic clash between two of the very best powerboat racing teams in the world with reigning US champions James Norvill and Charlie Parsons-Young and current UK and world champions Sam and Daisy Coleman fighting it out for top spot.
There were also new faces on the start line with Spirit of Inverclyde, Pickfords and South Street all obtaining new crews, whilst Milford Waterfront flying the flag for Wales.
The racing format featured a series of heats determined by a hot-lap qualification system all building up to a Grand Final and Plate Final on Sunday.
Platinum Products set the standard with a flying lap of 1.50.15, just under half a second ahead of Pertemps Network in second. It was a gap of four seconds back to Experience Kissimmee in third, followed by Milford Waterfront, Spirt of Inverclyde, Typhoo Tornado, Arthur J Gallagher, Pickfords and South Street.
The heats followed a similar pattern as Platinum and Pertemps dominated their races, recording two wins to put them through to the Grand Final with minimum fuss.
Experience Kissimmee and Milford Waterfront followed close behind with seconds in both their respective heats; the latter pushing the reigning champs Pertemps close in heat four after taking the lead on lap one.
The final spot in the Grand Final was taken by debutant father-daughter pairing Dave and Ashleigh Finlayson in the Spirit of Inverclyde boat whose intensive preparation paid dividends as they secured their place by just one point.
The unlucky teams to miss out were Pickfords and Typhoo who both finished the day on 40 points, whilst Arthur J Gallagher and South Street rounded off the standings.
Tomorrow promises to provide a dramatic conclusion to the weekend’s racing as the top two continue their fiercely competitive duel with the P1 Aalborg Grand Prix of the Sea title on the line.
