End of Season Review: Spirit of Inverclyde

It was a memorable first full campaign for Ashleigh and Dave Finlayson as they showed their quality in the Spirit of Inverclyde Panther.

The father-daughter pairing competed in two meetings during the 2016 season and displayed their skills on local waters in Greenock by finishing level on points with Quantum Racing in fourth before taking to the waters in Gosport.

This time around they travelled to Denmark for the 2017 Championship opener in Aalborg. A third-place spot in Heat 1 was a great way to begin their campaign before finishing fifth in their next two outings and rounded off the weekend with sixth in the Super Final.

Next on the calendar was a home fixture as the SuperStock world descended on Greenock. They repeated their 53-point feat courtesy of three fifth-places and a spot in fourth.

It was a frustrating first day of the final weekend in Milford Haven as they suffered mechanical issues in Heat 1 which saw them miss the following two races. Inverclyde responded on Sunday with their best results in the competition, claiming a pair of fourth-place finishes and second in the final race - their highest position of the year.

“We were expecting to be in the middle of the pack with our previous racing experience, and were hoping that as we spent more time in the Panther we could move up through some positions,” Ashleigh Finlayson said.

“It was a challenging season due to some mechanical issues we sustained, but we proved worthy to be running a Panther as we overcame each obstacle that could have stopped us from racing. We have certainly grown more confident in the Panther’s abilities and ours after some close racing and tough water conditions.

“Our favourite weekend obviously was our home race in Greenock. It was a weekend of extremely challenging water conditions which we loved, and some very close racing which is what we live for. It was so great to race along the esplanade in front of the home crowd.

“Having had this year as our introduction into P1 Superstock, we certainly know more about set up than we did previously but we are hoping to be able to spend more time on the water testing and trying out different set ups. We want to go into next season ready to go.”
