Portimao, Portugal
Where to Stay
Europe’s most popular sun-soaked city certainly isn’t short of accommodation options. You’ll find four- and five-star hotels dotted across the city, as well as more budget-focused ones. However, booking ahead is essential, given the influx of tourists over summer. Leave it too late, and you’ll find yourself forced to stay in one of the neighbouring towns.
In style
While there is a raft of luxury accommodation in Portimão, there is really only one place to stay. Hotel Algarve Casino (Praia da Rocha, Portimao, www.algarvecasinohotel.com) is the five-star hotel of choice for seasoned regulars.
Overlooking one of the coastal city’s most beautiful beaches, the hotel blends breathtaking views with contemporary chic. It’s also a short walk from the city’s wealth of attractions and places of interest. Extravagant, spacious guestrooms are complemented by stylish interior design, while amenities and service are exceptional. What’s more, the majority of suites have magnificent panoramic views of the Mediterranean.
While tantalising beaches front the hotel, the Hotel Algarve Casino also boasts a gorgeous outdoor pool, complete with an aquatic park. The complex also features luxurious touches such as a Turkish bath, along with saunas and Jacuzzis. The hotel has a host of in-house attractions including the Hotel Casino, chic bars and outstanding restaurants. Expect to pay 275 euro for a standard twin (mountain views), while a deluxe twin (ocean views) will cost 515 euro.
On a budget
Jardins Da Rocha Apartments (Edifício Jardins da Rocha Avenida, Praia da Rocha, +351 282 424 534, www.jardinsdarocha.com) is extraordinary value for money, particularly when you consider its location. Sitting on the fringe of the vibrant Praia da Rocha, its the perfect area to explore Portimão from. Beaches such as Rocha and Tres Castelos are also close by.
It’s modern and comfortable, with friendly staff, and its high-rise setting provides charming ocean views. While the three-star hotel offers a variety of room options, electing a one-bedroom apartment or studio is highly recommended. Each features a well-equipped kitchenette and a balcony, and the complex offers a level of service that belies its rating. Facilities are excellent – including two swimming pools, a tennis court, as well as a beautifully maintained garden and playground. Expect to pay 92 euro for a one-bedroom apartment or studio.
